ABC's New Bachelor Apologizes for Saying Gay Version Would Be Bad for Kids

ABC’s newest “bachelor” has landed himself in a lot of trouble after passing anti-gay remarks in response to a question about a possible spin-off of the show featuring gay people and the idea of gay love.

The dating show has for long been promoting straight love by pitting a group of female contestant who compete for the affections of a single male “prize” who will marry the winner. Insisting that his words were taken out of context despite there being an audio version of the interview online, Juan Pablo Galavis is said to have stated, “I don’t think it is a goof example for kids to watch that on TV”, and going on to opine over how it was possible for gay parents to raise a child at all.

The father of a 5-year old girl, the bachelor appeared to forget the sexist overtones of the heterosexual show itself as he claimed to want to “protect children” from the queer community, who, in his opinion, were “more perverted” than straight people. He later issued an apology for his ignorant statements, and even reached out to the queer support group GLAAD in an attempt to erase his mistake. He also blamed the fact that English was his second language, not his first, which is possibly why he had unintentionally made the insensitive, widely criticized comments.
