LGBT News from School: What Happened to the Students Being Gay?

Students Being Gay

In a period where homosexuals are struggling to gain acceptance for their orientation, there are more breaking LGBT news to add to their struggle. While public schools publicly accept homosexuality and their homosexual students, many private and religious-based schools have the legal right to expel students who have come ‘out’ as lesbian or gay.

This has attracted much controversy in the country, as many find this discriminatory and homophobic to the gay students and lesbian students. Members of the government are looking to pass laws to make this current practice illegal.

There have been surveys conducted among students in school about their sexual orientation and of the reception they receive from others in school. Over 60% of those who are gay or lesbian or ‘unsure’ have experienced some kind of homophobic bullying by their peers. Called ‘dyke’ or taunted for seeming too ‘feminine’, the students are experiencing bullying that tends to leave deeper and more permanent scars.

Transgender students have experienced gender bullying for attempting to use restrooms with the gender they most closely identify with.

The most recent controversy with the private schools have deepened the division between those that want to keep homosexuality out of schools and those that feel that homosexuals have the right to practice their sexual orientation freely at school.
