Hawaii Becomes the Fifteenth State to Allow Gay Marriage

Hawaii has officially joined the ‘cool’ club in the United States. In a move that has sparked major controversy throughout the country the state government has passed a law making same-sex marriage legal in the state. This move has left many same sex couples ecstatic. This comes twenty years after the state Supreme Court had ruled that banning gay marriage was illegal.

Being the fifteenth state in the nation to make same sex marriages legal, Hawaii has attracted much controversy for the constitutional ruling by the state Supreme Court. With all that controversy died down, Hawaii has now been officially able to give citizens the right to marry anyone they want.

President Barack Obama praised Hawaii for passing same sex marriage laws. He said, “By giving loving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry if they choose, Hawaii exemplifies the values we hold dear as a nation.” This passing of the gay marriage law is personal to Obama, as he was born and raised in Hawaii.

Gay rights advocates have claimed that this is a tremendous victory to gay and lesbian couples. Several other states have made gay marriage legal, from Massachusetts being the leader to Illinois being the most recent. California is currently in the process of going to court to make it legal.
