2013 has been full of Hollywood celebrities and their coming out stories, and it seems that the number of gay celebrities has doubled. Famous gay people such as Ellen DeGeneres and Portia Di Rossi have been icons of gay love for many years now, but when Prison Break star Wentworth Miller came out about his orientation, alongside fitness guru and “The Biggest Loser” reality star, Bob Harper, it led to an almost domino-like reaction from celebrities around the world who felt inspired to share their stories of coming out and being gay.
The focus in 2013 was on Russia, which earned a lot of criticism for its regressive attitudes on homosexuality; this however, did not stop some brave LGBT Russian citizens from coming out and condemning their policies. Masha Bast, a human rights lawyer based in Russia, came out as a bisexual transgender woman, while Russian television anchor, Anton Krasovsky took the risk of coming out on during a live television broadcast.
Among the many sports personalities who chose to come out were figure skater, Brian Boitano, British Olympic diver, Tom Daley, Football star, Kevin Grayson, WWE wrestler, Darren Young, MMA fighter, Fallon Fox, and U.S. soccer star, Abby Wambach. Stars such as Jodie Foster, Raven Simone, and Victor Garber also came out.
