Out and proud singer, Melissa Etheridge, made her support for the LGBT community evident during a recent event for a movement called “Uprising of Love” that was held in New York.
In the course of the private fundraising event, which was held in support of the Russian Freedom Fund, which aims to bring LGBT rights in Russia, Etheridge added some American LGBT support to the event by singing “Uprising of Love”, a song dedicated towards highlighting the plight of LGBT citizens in Russia. It is most effective to have celebrity gay citizens like Etheridge, whose endorsements of new social movements can do a world of good to movements abroad that are not as supportive of them.
The right of LGBT citizens to live freely has come under scrutiny in many parts of the world, including Russia and India. New laws make it difficult for an LGBT citizen to live in peace, and they are often subjected to abuse, discrimination and various forms of harassment, which is not restricted to emotional, physical, and even sexual. With the support and endorsement by Melissa Etheridge and a host of other celebrities such as Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, James Franco, Sean Hayes, George Takei, Sigourney Weaver, and Sara Gilbert, it is hoped that the people of Russia will find a ray of hope.
