In Illinois a new marriage law will take effect next June. This is a significant development so far as gay marriage laws are concerned. These laws allow gay couples to marry before time if one of the couple has a very grave or terminal illness that could result in their death before the new marriage law effecting marriage equality takes effect next June.
US Federal Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman has spoken in favour of such a law and this may be passed later. Gay couples will have a chance to take advantage of this law to formalize their marriages which at present are often in the form of a civil marriage.

Gay people will benefit greatly from this ruling. Many of these couples have been together for very long periods of time this will allow them to enshrine their relationship in law. In case one of the couple died this would deprive the other of the right to marry. Gay rights will be greately advanced by this ruling. However, this judgement is subject to the provison that adequate means be found for executing the law. Also, which couples would qualify under the new law also needs to be clearly demarcated.
